CASE STUDY

Supervisory Development

OIM was first approached by Kumba in 2015 to implement our Supervisory Development Programme (SDP). At the time the commodity price created a challenging environment, but the pilot delivered such positive results OIM was contracted for a roll-out across Sishen and Kolomela.

Focused on driving profitability through the development of first-line leaders and process optimisation, the project spanned several sites and operational divisions – including Mining, Plant, and Engineering – and involved more than 50 supervisors. This work was completed end of 2019 and was well received by all parties.

OIM’s leading supervisory transformation journey was implemented with a focus on building supervisory competency, improving role execution, and equipping the organisation’s leadership with the relevant toolsets, skillsets and mindsets to ensure sustainability going forward.

OUTCOMES

Role Execution: Day Planner

Does your supervisor execute well?

Significant improvements were recorded in the execution of daily activities evaluated against four Day Planner elements and individual key performance indicators (KPIs). The successful implementation of these tasks has a direct correlation to the golden rule: more productive tonnes safely – every day.

OUTCOMES

Role Execution: KPI's

Is there a shift in the performance metrics?

While there was a general increase across the key KPI categories, it is important to note that most of the returns will only be realised within a period of 6-12 months, provided that line managers continue to instil the culture of continuous improvement and coaching.

OUTCOMES

Role Execution: Maturity Levels

What is your supervisor’s approach to daily tasks?

OIM’s programme takes supervisors on a developmental coaching journey to improve their competencies and role execution. The aim is to mature them from unstructured and reactive decision-makers to innovative thinkers who influence peers and foster continuous improvement within their teams.

The diagram below indicates a clear positive shift in maturity levels.

OUTCOMES

Competency Levels

How competent are your supervisors?

Supervisors were tested in six competencies that are vital to job performance, and a marked improvement was recorded.

CONTINUED INVOLVEMENT

Supervisory Development at Anglo

Kumba

In 2021 OIM was approached to kick off the “Supervisor of the Future” initiative at both mines. Starting at Sishen in November, the implementation was rebranded LEAP and was fully aligned and integrated into Anglo American’s Operating and Organisational Model. Kolomela followed in 2023, but activities were put on hold, with a continuation expected early in 2024.

Anglo American Platinum

OIM won the tender to develop 1 400 supervisors throughout all Platinum’s operations in South Africa. The programme is being rolled out as part of the Group’s “Culture in Action” programme, with an aim to inculcate the right behaviours and mindsets around the Anglo Operating Model and Organisational Models. This meant that OIM had to interact closely with Anglo American Head Office and site-specific operating model teams. We successfully aligned the SDP with Anglo’s Capability Framework, Culture in Action, and the Safety Leadership Practices.

Successes thus far:

“Arjen de Bruin, I must say your supervisory and front-line leader development programme is still the best I have ever experienced.”
